Southport’s 18 metre high Christmas tree is now shining bright above the town!

The impressive structure is provided for the town centre each year thanks to local businesses through Southport BID.

The dazzling structure sparkles with mesmerising colour-changing displays thanks to 25,000 LED pixels.

It was installed throughout Monday daytime and evening by a team of lighting experts from Southport family-run firm IllumiDex UK Ltd.

Last year Southport BID contracted IllumiDex to create the stunning ‘boulevard of light’ along the historic Lord Street in Southport, with 300,000 LED lights wrapped around 80 trees on both sides of the route.

They also work together to provide all the Christmas decorations throughout Southport town centre, on roads including Lord Street, Chapel Street, Eastbank Street, Nevill Street, London Street and others, which were lit up on Monday night.

Southport BID CEO Rachel Fitzgerald said: “Installing the Christmas tree and all the Christmas decorations throughout Southport town centre will create a really festive feeling!

“Added to the 300,000 lights which Southport BID provided along Lord Street last year they will add real sparkle for everyone doing their Christmas shopping in Southport this year.

“The town is full of fabulous shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels and other local businesses which are all playing their part in making Southport a magical place to be at this time of year.

“We have our Festive Fun Day taking place this Saturday (19th November) in the Town Hall Gardens, with everyone welcome.

“Our Christmas Grotto will also be open this Saturday, and people will also be able to enjoy our new Christmas Carriage rides.

“Families will also be able to enjoy taking part in our Southport Gingerbread Trail – see how many you can find!

“Please take a look at our Southport BID website for more details of what you can enjoy. Early booking is advised on some of the attractions, with money going towards three local charities; Southport Lions Club, Southport Lifeboat and Queenscourt Hospice.

“There is lots more happening in Southport this year with drive-in Christmas movies at Victoria Park, festive films at Bijou Cinema Southport, Elf School at Southport Market, a Christmas Lights Parade, pantomimes at The Atkinson and Southport Little Theatre, and much more besides.”

People are invited to kick off the start of the 2022 Christmas shopping season in Southport with a special Festive Fun Day this weekend.

The fun, free event, organised by Southport BID and The Atkinson, will take place on Saturday 19th November 2022.

Festive shoppers will be able to enjoy performances from local dance schools at The Bandstand, Christmas Carols in the Town Hall Gardens and the opening day of lots of activities and events.

The Bandstand will host Express Performing Arts Academy, Central Dance Studios, BabyBallet, and local singer Kelly Bond performing Christmas songs between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

The Town Hall Gardens will see people coming together around Southport’s Christmas tree between 4pm and 5pm for traditional carols and classic hits. The event will be hosted by Claire Simmo and Sandgrounder Radio featuring performances from The Atkinson Wellbeing Choir, All Souls Dramatic Club and SONG (Southport Operatic New Generation).
